We don’t eat just to live. If we did, we would have no problem with our weight. But eating, and particularly over-eating, is frequently an emotional experience, and when we want to lose weight effectively and permanently, we often need to look at the layers of reasons for eating and drinking more than our bodies need, which makes us fat.

Of course we all know which foods cause us to pile on the weight, feel bloated and become sluggish, yet we can find it difficult to stop eating them and switch to the healthy alternatives which give us energy. Why is that?

Maybe we were brought up to clean our plates and avoid waste, perhaps we rush our food, failing to savour each mouthful and planning already what we can eat next. Possibly we derive comfort from the ‘mouthfeel’ food manufacturers aim for, or we enjoy the brief sugar ‘high’ from sweet foods – which soon slumps again. Remember that oral satisfaction was one of our earliest pleasures as a baby, and that remains important in our lives.

The problem is that unfortunately we can feel alienated from our bodies, even despise them, as we move further and further away from our vision of becoming slim and energetic. A harshly critical attitude to size pervades our society, and as we inflict on ourselves successive ‘miracle’ diets which never work for long, we fail to hear what our bodies are telling us about what we really need for our health.
